New land lots to cost less
In a bid to get the home building industry back on its feet, the Queensland Government will cap its Infrastructure Charges at $28,000 for a three or more bedroom home, with one or two bedroom homes capped at $20,000. It had been a core demand by home builder groups to have the charges reduced.
Restoring Housing Affordability
QLD Premier Anna Bligh said the reduction on Government charges would go some way to improving housing affordability, especially in the South East.
She said current charges to help fund infrastructure such as water, sewerage and roads needed to support new dwellings were as high as $50,000, so there is a drop in prices of around $22,000.
Infrastructure charges are administered by local governments and paid by developers when new dwellings are constructed. So the new home buyer is the real payer of the charge.
Ms Bligh told Tuesday’s forum the cap on infrastructure charges would provide certainty, and help address the housing affordability in Queensland, particularly in the southeast.
